Remembering San Diego’s Hero and Legend – Junior Seau

We San Diegans are deeply saddened at the death of our local hero and legend “Junior” Seau. He was much-loved in the sports community from day one when he was drafted fifth overall by the San Diego Chargers in the 1990 draft. He gave his all to his home team (the Chargers) for 13 seasons until he was traded to the Miami Dolphins. He later signed with the New England Patriots in time for the 2006 season. Seau was considered one of the league’s most dominating linebackers in the NFL during his career.

Seau was not only a fantastic athlete with a heart and passion for football; he was a caring, giving man who made a huge impact in the San Diego Community, most particularly with our youth. He was the Founder, Leader and friend of the Junior Seau Foundation whose mission is:

To educate and empower young people through the support of child abuse prevention, drug and alcohol awareness, recreational opportunities, anti-juvenile delinquency efforts and complimentary educational programs.

The Junior Seau Foundation sponsors three major programs each year to benefit San Diego’s most important resource – its children! These programs are underwritten by both individual and corporate donors who want to make a difference in the lives of children. Seau was deeply involved in charity work, having donated nearly $4million for services and scholarships to children and young adults. Before his death he attended the 18th Annual 911 for Kids Celebrity ProAm Classic. 911 for Kids is an organization dedicated to teaching children about the seriousness of calling 911 and how to properly communicate with emergency operators.
His passing was a shocking tragedy to all of us. Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers go out to the Seau family and his many friends who mourn his loss. May he rest in peace!

Time’s running out. Mother’s Day is this weekend. If you haven’t made any plans yet or bought a gift for the “Mom” in your family, time’s a-wasting. It offers indoor and outdoor seating and has several levels of service and prices. Point Loma Seafoods is another great choice. It features 2 stories of seating and orders are placed at the counter. Then there’s the Island of Coronado. The town is quaint and it’s a beautiful location. The Hotel Del (the Del) Coronado is featuring special menus for Mother’s Day. Mother’s Day is kind-of a big deal at “the Del”. You can also enjoy a walk along the “sands of Coronado,” after your meal. If you enjoy Latin Music, Sea World is sponsoring the fourth annual Viva La Musica series. Chino Y Nacho – Reggaeton are playing on Saturday, May 12 and on Sunday, Mother’s Day they are featuring Mariachi Vargas De Tecalitlan – Traditional Mariachi. Chris Botti is scheduled for June 3rd at 3 p.m. and Dave Koz for August 18 at 6 p.m. Jonathan Butler is also scheduled to perform on August 12 at 3 p.m. at Thornton Winery.
